There are probably a lot of things you trust yourself for. But is weight loss one of them?
Why is it that we can trust ourselves to show up for work, to care for other people, to get things done in our life but find it hard to trust that we can care for our body?
I think there are a couple of things that impact trust around weight loss. One is past evidence. As soon as we think about doing something, our brain immediately looks for evidence that we can do this. It wants the confidence of knowing we can do something because we already did.
But what if you have never done what you are wanting? What if you have never lost weight and kept it off and have no evidence that you can? Then you need to build that confidence and trust another way. It doesn’t mean you won’t or can’t do it, it just means you haven’t done it yet.
The other things that impacts whether we trust ourselves to lose weight is our thoughts. We carry a lot of limiting beliefs around weight loss that undermine our ability to trust ourselves. Thoughts about not having a choice, about not doing it well enough or not losing weight fast enough. And many, many others…. All of these thoughts limit us. And they erode the trust we have with ourselves.
Building Self Trust
The good news is you can build self trust. And I would go as far to say that you should build self trust. When you trust yourself to follow through on your plans, to figure things out no matter what happens and to keep going even when it feels hard then the world is your oyster. You can accomplish anything including losing weight and keeping it off.
When you trust yourself, there is no failure. Quitting doesn’t happen, problem solving happens.
When you trust yourself, you have your own back.
