Let’s face it, the way we have been taught to approach weight goals is more than a little F’d up.

Your goal is this golden line in the sand where if we could only reach it, we would be able to celebrate and relax.

But this thinking is one of the biggest reasons why maintaining weight loss never seems to work out.

This diet thinking has us doing things we don’t want to do, treating ourselves like shit and pushing ourselves beyond what is sustainable.  All because we naively believe reaching our goal is the hard part, and everything will be rainbows and sunshine once we get there.

It’s bullshit.

And it’s not just messing with your weight – it’s wrecking your life too.

It feels like things are tough because you haven’t reached your goal, but a lot of the defeat, shame and other “tough” things are actually created by this way of approaching weight loss.

Trust me, I’ve been there. I clung onto this idea for years. Now, looking back, I see the unnecessary struggle I created for myself and how I was setting myself up for failure.

This week on the Thriving As A Physician podcast, I’m ripping off the band-aid and sharing the truths about maintaining significant weight loss and what I wish I knew back then.

And how I would have done things differently.

Warning – I’m passionate about this topic and the language in the podcast gets a little *spicey* 🤬.  Don’t listen with your kids in the car.

Here’s the short version –

⇒ Don’t do shit you don’t want to do to lose weight. Why? Because you’ll have to keep doing it to maintain that loss.

⇒ Learn to start loving your body now, flaws and all. because that mean girl that lives inside your head is totes able to find things to hate about your body at a lower weight

⇒ Focus on creating a life you love NOW. Because let’s be honest, your weight goal is less about the number on the scale and more about the life you imagine at that weight. Life will still have its ups and downs even when you hit your goal. So why not focus on enjoying the journey?

The good news is that if you start shifting your focus to these things, you’ll make your weight loss journey a hell of a lot easier and set yourself up for success.
