Today I am discussing the importance of planning our decisions in advance, and why so many of us tend to avoid it. This is something I am always working on and I know that the idea of having more of your life planned out can feel like it zaps all the fun out. Trust me when I say that it doesn’t have to. When done correctly, preplanning can make your weight loss and life more enjoyable and run a lot smoother.

Making choices in the moment wears on our capacity for reasoning. Even small decisions, like what to eat for lunch, can cost us extra energy as our brain switches from one task to another. When we plan our choices beforehand, it saves us valuable time and energy that can be better focused elsewhere.

To begin planning, first ask yourself which decisions you will be making ahead of time. What will you eat, and when? Make your plans realistic and adaptable to suit your needs. Find what works for you and do your best to stick to it. Your body will thank you in the long run!

If you are resistant to the idea of pre-planning because it seems restrictive, boring or too much extra work, combat this by reframing the idea as a gift your future self will appreciate. You can start right now by writing down everything you plan to eat for the next 24 hours. Make sure it is a plan you will actually enjoy and then see how simple it can be to follow.
