Staying motivated while losing weight can feel so fickle.  At times motivation is around in spades and feels so simple and strong.  Then the next day it can seem to evaporate like it was never there.  But to make consistent long term lifestyle changes and achieve a lasting weight loss, we need to figure out how to get our minds focussed and keep them focussed.  Even when we are tired.  Even when the week is really stressful.  Even when we are on call. Even when we don’t really want to.

In this episode, I explain a system of figuring out why you want to make changes. If you don’t have really solid reasons for why you want to lose weight, it will be hard to make choices that support your weight loss goal consistently.  Your brain will more easily sway you towards the short term rewards of eating tempting foods and giving in to cravings. Figuring out why you want this and reminding yourself regularly is key.

The next important aspect I talk about is believing that you can do this.  Even if you haven’t done it before.  Motivation can’t go very far if your brain is telling you that you won’t be able to do it.

The final and most important tip is to recognize that you will not always feel motivated.  And that is ok.  It is normal to have days where you don’t want to keep going and would prefer to go back to old habits. Accept that these days are normal. Don’t beat yourself up about it.  And then tap into your internal grit and do what you have to do anyways. Just like we get up and go to work on days we don’t really feel like it, we need to get up and make our healthy food on days we don’t feel like it. Dig in and do it.  The motivation will come back around and teaching yourself that you can do it anyways is powerful!
