Ever wonder how exactly coaching fits with the medical approach to treatment of obesity?
Does it have to be one or the other? Either you decide to go on a medication like a GLP-1 or you invest in coaching?
We are sharing our thoughts on exactly how medical management of obesity and coaching fit together.
This is a good one, make sure you listen to it. You are benefitting from A LOT of combined years of experience on this one.
Here’s how I like to think about how obesity medicine works with coaching approaches.
First, in my time practicing Obesity Medicine, medical management of obesity has gotten so much better. I think it’s amazing that we have effective medications that are becoming more accessible for patients (though not right now with current shortages 😣)
There is still a long way to go in affordability and coverage for patients as well as different options for people who are unable to tolerate one of the few available options (and I suspect this will continue to evolve at a fairly rapid rate)
But medications aren’t the full answer. They are a fantastic tool but don’t always change emotional or binge eating patterns.
I like to think of managing weight similarly to how we think about managing chronic pain. Depending on one treatment is unlikely to be completely effective. But when you build a tool box of a whole lot of ways to approach challenges, you start to see real change.
This is where coaching comes in. GLP-1’s (and other meds) help with the appetite piece. Coaching teaches you how to empower yourself in improving your relationship to food, reducing your daily stress (which reduces cravings) and gives you the mindset to keep going for the long haul.
Those are my quick thoughts, but make sure you listen to the full episode on your favourite podcast player to truly benefit from the combined wisdom in this interview.
