Today I am happy to welcome Karen Thomson, author of Sugar Free: 8-Week Program to Freedom from Sugar and Carb Addiction, to the show. Karen will share her own experiences with sugar addiction, her ongoing recovery, and how to prioritize self-care while continuing to give yourself compassion.

Originally from South Africa, Karen is now based in Palm Springs, California. Karen’s background is in addiction, starting with her own. Beginning as food addiction, Karen ultimately developed drug and alcohol addictions as a young adult. A key turning point in her journey was her decision to attend an inpatient rehab program. Her rehab was an 18-month journey of self-discovery and confronting the beginnings of her addiction: using food as a comfort since she was 4-years-old.  Karen then went on to open an addiction treatment facility, including food addictions, with her partner.  This episode is loaded with advice from Karen on what it is like to manage sugar addiction long term. Be sure to listen to the full episode.

Doing the internal work is the best thing you can do. Journal and look at what your triggers are. Why are you craving? What can you do to soothe yourself? Once you can acknowledge these feelings and understand them, you have the power to change the cycle.

Key Takeaways:
• Recovery from sugar addiction is an ongoing process, it takes consistent focus
• Find your triggers for cravings.
• Remember that you are in control. You can make the choice to create change.
