Goals, who wants some?

What is it about goals that makes us all think we should be doing them but never actually want to sit down and write them out? I think there are lots of different factors that influence us but it ultimately comes down to the fact that it’s uncomfortable to set goals that take you outside of your comfort zone.

Let’s face it, our brain likes what it knows. It likes doing things the way we have always done them. Setting goals and working on self change processes are therefore uncomfortable for brains.

When we set up a goal, the flip-side is that we risk not meeting that goal and potentially ”failing”. [The whole concept of what constitutes failure and weight loss is a whole other topic!]

So why are they worth doing?

If we don’t set goals and work towards achieving them, it means we are leaving our situation up to the more primitive part of our brain. And those primitive parts of our brain will generally keep us in a similar situation to what we are currently in.

If you want to change your weight, your lifestyle or anything else, setting a goal is one of the best tools to get you where you want to be. It makes use of your brain intentionally and keeps it focussed on where you are going.

If you know where you are going and why you want to go there, it is SO much easier to take the action that will help you get there.

Make them measurable

A vague goal is like trying to read a map my 5 year old drew. If it is just “lose weight” or “feel better”, your brain has no way of knowing how to get there or how to know when you are there. It leaves far to much room for interpretation. Make the goal specific and something that you can measure so you know exactly when you get there.

Keep Reminding Yourself

Once you set your goals, you HAVE to keep reminding yourself of what they are. Trust me on this, your brain will erase all memories of having a goal unless you keep it in the front of your mind.

Put some sticky notes around the house, write it down every day, read it before bed. Do whatever it takes to keep your goal fresh and your brain focussed on it.
