Having Excess Weight Was One of the Best Things that Happened to Me

I have spent many years thinking all sorts of horrible things about my weight and my body shape and size. I wished that I would just find a magic fix and not have to worry about my weight any more.

Looking back now, I have a different perspective. I can see that the weight was there for a reason. In the midst of it, there did not seem to be any positives to my weight struggle. But the truth is, having excess weight and working on losing it has given me gifts I wouldn’t have gotten anywhere else.

If you are working on your own journey, I want to show you the silver lining you may not have seen yet.

When you can view your weight though a more positive lens, it becomes easier to shed. And the process is more enjoyable.

Lessons Learned:

If you keep trying and never give up, you can reach your goal.
My weight is the number one thing in my life that has required me to keep showing up and keep starting from the beginning on. Even when I felt embarrassed or ashamed of regaining weight or not being able to lose it. When I think back, this took more resilience and sustained effort than even getting through medical school and residency. At least with school, I had confidence I would finish at some point. With my weight, I spent a lot of years unsure if I would ever reach the end.

 

Success comes through lots of failures
To reach big goals, you have to be willing to fail. Nowhere is this clearer than with personal weight struggles. To hit big goals, you have to be willing to try, fail and try again. And with weight, sometimes these failures feel very public. You have to build the skill of problem solving around things that don’t go well and working on figuring out new ways of trying.

 

If I can do this, I can do anything
As I said above, my weight struggle was the longest standing, most frustrating problem I have worked on. Having reaching a confidence with my weight, I know that I can accomplish pretty much anything I put my mind to and you can too!

I honestly wouldn’t be the person I am today or doing the things I am doing today if I had never had excess weight. It has shaped me in some pretty great ways.

No matter where you are on your own weight loss journey, these gifts are happening. They may be behind the scenes and not immediately visible, but they are there. And the beauty of these gifts is that you don’t have to wait until you lose weight to access them.

They are there, waiting for you.
