Diagnosing your health is not as simple as looking at one indicator. In this episode, Dr. Catherine Harmon Toomer is here to talk about her own experience in realizing this. Finding the root of her issues was crucial in her weight loss journey, the health impacts it had on her, and how she approaches weight loss now as a coach.
Since leaving clinical medicine Dr. Toomer has created Health Wellness and Weight Loss Centers, LLC through which she provides tele-medicine, counseling, and coaching services. She struggled with weight gain after high school and it only worsened over time. After having her second daughter she was on insulin, and a month later, she was diagnosed with congestive heart failure.
So, how did she manage to reverse her disease processes? Remember, you have to find the cause of the problem and address it for anything to stick. It wasn’t until she treated her depression that she was able to adjust her mindset.
As a coach, Dr. Toomer tells her clients that it is not about numbers, it’s about how you feel. She tells us how she has learned to give verbal hugs and use her own points of reference to recognize any issues her clients may be having.
Dr. Toomer also explains why you need to take a bio-psycho-social approach to your health. It isn’t just about weight; the whole is what is important. Don’t ignore psychological factors and don’t try to wish away the physical ones. Learn what works for you and pay attention to the signs of what doesn’t.
