As physicians, we are the last people on our list for self-care. We put everyone else’s care before our own and often neglect our needs. What if taking the time for self-care made us better at providing care for everyone else?
I am speaking with Dr. Shri Noel to cover all things self-care in this week’s episode. Dr. Noel is an internal medicine physician and runs Step by Step Wellness and Weight Loss, providing coaching to help people reach their wellness goals.
Dr. Noel wants you to remember that it isn’t selfish to make time for self-care. If you are energized, you can show up better for everyone in your life. She goes on to share some quick self-care techniques you can easily integrate into your busy day. It can be as simple as taking 5 minutes to read a book or listen to music. Schedule it, set timers and persevere to form the habit.
Food is so often a quick fix for self-care, and is so ingrained throughout our lives, that we have lost the ability to use other, healthier coping strategies. Look for things that create a long-lasting sense of fulfilment. Consistency is key, so don’t give up if it doesn’t work right away.
To end the episode, Dr. Noel reminds us that self-care is different for everyone, and can be what you need it to be. Make a list of things that make you feel better and keep it visible. Schedule the time for yourself, even if it’s just 5 minutes a day.
