A few weeks back, I was teaching communication skills to first-year med students. They were brand new, interviewing standardized patients in front of everyone. It brought back memories of my own early years, filled with awkward encounters (though these students did impressively well!).
I remember being sent into a clinic to see a patient on my own for the first time – shaking like a leaf! I worried about messing up. But hey, that’s what med school is for, right? To make mistakes and learn from them.
Now, let’s apply this to your weight & eating habits.
How much time are you spending trying not to do anything wrong? And how often are you delaying starting or taking the next step because of this?
In this final episode of the Fresh Start Series on the Thriving As A Physician Podcast, I talk about the 5 common pitfalls that could be slowing you down.
Guess what…one of the biggest pitfalls we all get stuck with is the idea that mistakes = failure. Which is a complete lie perpetuated through diet culture.
Just like med school, if you want to not only lose weight for good but ALSO do it in a way where you can feel comfortable around any food, then you are going to need to try some new things.
And some days will feel like a complete faceplant – like when your eating has felt really good all week…and then you end up emptying the snack cupboard after a particularly frazzled clinic day.
But that’s not a problem – it’s a learning opportunity.
The skills learned from days like this (not perfection) are what will ultimately get you to your goals.
In the podcast, I also discuss other pitfalls like:
👉 Focusing too much on food instead of understanding your eating behavior
👉 Waiting for a motivation surge to start (I teach how to cultivate it)
👉 Reverting to restriction when things get tough
👉 Being overly critical about your eating or weight
