What does choice have to do with your weight loss?
Everything.
Have you ever noticed that when you follow a “diet” with rules and guidelines set out by someone else, about what you can and cannot eat, it feels crappy?
Owning choice is one of the most powerful things you can do when you are on a weight loss journey.
When you follow a diet that restricts what you are “allowed” to eat, you are following someone else’s rules and are no longer in control of your food choices. Eventually, you will start to resist the diet. When you tell your brain that you are not allowed to eat a certain food you will start to want it more – it creates deprivation.
What would happen if you told yourself that you are allowed to eat whatever you want, whenever you want, but you are choosing not to right now? And when you do decide to eat the food, what would happen if you took time to enjoy it instead of rushing to finish because you feel like you shouldn’t be eating it?
This is the simple shift to owning your choice.
And it is very empowering.
Instead of allowing your brain to tell you that you “can’t” or are “not allowed” to eat certain foods, make it a choice. Recognize that when you are choosing to eat a particular food (even when it is junk food, even if it is more than what you would normally eat) that it is simply a choice you are making on this particular day. You may make a different choice on another day.
Holding the power of eating being a choice will allow you to feel more empowered in all of your food choices.
Knowing that you can choose the food at any time will make it easier to not choose it. Owning your choice empowers you – when you are empowered it becomes easier to make choices in line with your goals.
This concept works on the flip side too… Deciding that choosing to not eat certain foods is a choice you are making (rather than something you have been told to do or have to do) will make following the way of eating that feels best for your body so much easier.
I know that this concept can feel scary. We’ve been taught a long time that food choices in weight loss come from external sources. That’s ok. But what if there was a better way?
Listen to this week’s episode to learn more about how this simple concept can revolutionize your weight loss.
